Post Doctoral Researcher

Dr. Maayan Cohen

Dr. Maayan Cohen (formerly Levavi Roichman) is an Oxford-trained anthropologist and one of the
two inaugural Israeli Rhodes Scholars. She is currently an Azrieli International Postdoctoral Fellow at
the AIMLAB and will continue her work there as an ERC Postdoctoral Fellow starting in October
2025. She has also been a Visiting Postdoctoral Scholar at Stanford University and is currently a
postdoctoral affiliate of both Oxford University’s Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology and
Tel Aviv University’s Department of Industrial Engineering (Interacting with Technology Lab).
Dr. Cohen’s doctoral research involved an immersive ethnography of the Israeli film industry,
focusing on the emerging generation of filmmakers. She is currently engaged in a long-term project
examining the development of generative AI through extensive ethnographic research in the tech
industries of Israel and Silicon Valley. Her work has been published in New Media & Society, The
Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Social Anthropology, and CHI.
As part of the ERC project, Dr. Cohen will continue her study of AI from an anthropological
perspective by conducting an ethnographic investigation of an Israeli high-tech company that is
pioneering automation across various levels of work and organizational structure. Her research will
particularly explore how algorithms shape and are shaped by managerial practices within the
company.
Dr. Cohen's research interests include the anthropology of ethics, psychological anthropology,
ethnographic and mixed methods, human-computer interaction, and critical algorithm studies.

Post Doctoral Researcher

Dr. Yaara Welcman

Dr. Yaara Welcman is a researcher specializing in digital transformation, healthcare innovation, and artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on their impact on the labour market. Her doctoral research investigated trading floors and algorithmic trading, examining how these technologies reshape the profession of traders and introduce new forms of uncertainty.

More broadly, Dr. Welcman explores the adoption of emerging technologies and collective responses to technological change. She is especially interested in the dynamics of technology implementation and its societal implications, offering insights into the challenges and opportunities that innovation presents.

Currently, she is a member of the research team at the Cambridge Digital Innovation Centre at the University of Cambridge. Her work focuses on "the hospital of the future," where she examines innovative healthcare models designed to meet the evolving demands of healthcare systems.

PhD Candidate

Yotam Liel

I am a 5th-year Information Systems Management PhD candidate, advised by Dr. Lior Zalmanson, and a doctoral fellow at the Center for Artificial Intelligence & Data Science (TAD) at Tel Aviv University. My research focuses on human-computer interaction, specifically on how people’s perceptions and use of AI affect their decision-making and interactions with AI and other individuals.

In my dissertation, I examine people’s conformity to AI and how perceptions of AI’s authority lead people to follow AI advice, even when it is clearly flawed. In other projects, I study how people learning from interacting with AI might lead to the risk of biased AI increasing prejudiced opinions and discrimination, and how co-creation with generative AI affects people’s sense of ownership over their own and others’ creative outputs.

My research has won several awards, including best paper recognition at the Academy of Management conference (2023 and 2024), the Best Research Paper by the Israel Chapter of the Association for Information Systems (ILAIS, 2022), the Grant for the Web Award from the Interledger Foundation and the Mozilla Foundation in 2022, and the Best in Track Short Research Paper at the International Conference of Information Systems (ICIS, 2020).

Before my PhD, I worked as a Product Manager at a start-up company. I hold a BA in Philosophy and Economics and an MSc in Information Systems Management from Tel Aviv University, both awarded Magna Cum Laude.
